The New House, continued…

Well, weekends have been consumed of late by the construction of our next (final) home, so there isn’t a ton of photo activity to talk about.

We’ve been driving back and forth to Williamsburg pretty much every weekend of late. Progress on the house is amazing. Josh, the contractor, hinted last week that they think it could be ready in June. Wow, that’s a far cry from August we were prepared for.

Let’s look at a few pictures to see the progress. This is going to be a standard set of shots around the house, in chronological order.

January 27th:

We met with the CG and the framer to go through the framing details.

February 3rd:

Today, we met virtually all the subs for the insides of the house, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and cabinets. It was a veritable maelstrom of activity. Far too much. We got all our details done and had a chance to walk through the house. The upstairs arrangement was a nice surprise. I was expecting a fairly low ceiling in the FROG and upstairs bedroom, but was pleasantly surprise to find that each were 9′ or more. Nicely done Larry.

February 10:

Today was our day to walk through the house with the electrician. Melanie and I had spent the week working on our plans so it was relatively short at 1 1/2 hours. The GC indicated he was expecting 3-4 hours and was greatly appreciative of our preparatory efforts. The electrician said he would “box up” the house and we could do a double check the next weekend.

It was amazing to see the trim carpenters working today. We hadn’t expected that. And these guys were fast. In the 2+ hours we were there, they did the whole left side of the house.

February 17:

The drive down to Williamsburg was a contretemps as a Costco truck had done an endo on I-95 about 15 miles south of Fredericksburg and we sat in a 1 1/2 hour delay.

To add to the pleasure, en route we received the estimate from the cabinet contractors which was 60% higher than the allowable. Holy carp. We knew there were some nice to haves in there, but this was large scale sticker shock.

We were supposed to do a walk through with the electrician today, but he was well and fully on the job, and the wiring was probably 60% complete. The electrician was there, and we wrapped up some loose ends.

The HVAC guys were there in full glory and had one of the two units already installed in the attic. And the plumber was/is about 75% done.

When the GC said they had plenty of work behind us and wanted to get us finished, they weren’t kidding,…

So, wonderful progress thus far. After sleeping on it overnight we we ratchet back on the nice to haves in the cabinet order and pay the delta. We will have a come to Jesus chat with the GC about his inadequate allowables at some point.

Website Minutae:

My plan was to turn on commenting for the site, but I’m embarrassed to admit that I haven’t the foggiest notion of how to do that with this theme. I’ll have to do some innerweb spelunking.

That’s about all for today. Methinks the blog will be predominantly about the house for a bit, as it’s consuming a goodly amount of time.

cheers,
