Miscellaneous ramblings

fisherman on a boat in the sea

Greetings fair reader.

My humble apologies for the hiatus.

I’d like to say I was busy, but honestly, not that busy. Just lots of stuff ongoing.

We had a nice Thanksgiving celebration at Jourdan and Stefani’s new (to them) house.

In retrospect, it’s been probably 25 years since the last time that Melanie and I did not host the Thanksgiving celebration. To be honest, it was very surreal. We thoroughly enjoyed it, truth be told. The food was excellent, and it was significantly less stressful than if we were doing the driving. Thanks guys.

On Friday, Jourdan and Stefani departed to Northern Virginia to Stefani’s parents, so Melanie and I transitioned from there to Meghan’s house.

We had a nice time there, helping in various honey-doo lists before departing Sunday morning. All in all, a very nice Holiday weekend.

Returning home, we’re in the process of unpacking, and I noticed there was water all over the island. H’mmm. Looking around, we don’t see any source, until we look up and see a spot on the ceiling. Oh, oh.

Going into the attic, the flooring next to the HVAC unit is wet.

I just assumed it was the humidifier, as we have had issues with humidifiers leaking in the past. So I turned it off, brought the shop vac upstairs and sucked up all the water I could find.

In the morning, I went back in the attic, and the floor and pan were wet again. This time, I’m baffled about what’s going on, so I start looking. Looking at the drain piping, I pull some of the insulation off and see this at the bottom of the heater:

H’mmm. I had no idea that the heater had a connection to the drain pipe. I tried to put the drain pipe back on the connection, but it wouldn’t budge. Then I remembered. Back in May, when the evaporator was changed, the technician had cut the drain line, and then put a couple on in, and then pulled the drain line to reconnect the evaporator case drain, pulling the connection off the heater in the process.

So, I sent the HVAC company a happy gram, and he said they would be there the next day.

So they show up, and the tech (a different one, the original one quit) took a look and said the water was leaking down the pipe, hitting the tee and draining off on the floor. Made sense, as I had thoroughly searched for a leak in the pan and couldn’t find one.

So, he re-plumbed everything, this time gluing the connection to the flue, and it’s been dry since. Talking to Randy, the guy who runs the HVAC company, he said he would have the ceiling repaired. The contractor who built the house has finally started working on the year-old year’s end punch list, so I told Randy that when the painters come, I’ll ask them if they could do it, either as part of the punch list, or at an extra fee.

In other news, I added another menu page to the site, with a list of all the postings here. You’ll see it, it’s at the top.

In yet more news, my “friend” ChatGPT and I are a bit on the outs here. “We” spent over a week in vain trying to set up my home lab to run Docker Swarm, with Traefik proxy to access applications on the home lab from the internet. It’s been an abysmal failure.

Compounding that, the primary computer of the lab has hung twice now, requiring a manual restart. Methinks it’s whispering impending failure at this juncture. So, I’m reevaluating how to move forward with this. Unfortunately, the skyrocketing price of ram isn’t going to help the situation if I decide to procure a more powerful single machine to run my apps on.

I had typed up a fairly long diatribe about the ongoing house completion issues, but decided to move it to its own post: House foibles
