Jamestown-Scotland Ferry

white ferry boat by rocky shore

Greetings and salutations.

My apologies for the gap in posting. We’ve been out of town the last couple of weekends, so that kinda threw a wrench in the post schedule.

Today we are going to talk a bit about the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry The ferry crosses the James River between Williamsburg and Surry.

Melanie and I first encountered the ferry when we were travelling back from the Cabinet Company of Virginia in Smithfield. We had met with Kirsten in laying out our kitchen cabinets, and for some reason Google Maps routed us across the ferry to get back to Williamsburg. I guess there was a traffic issue on the other route.

Anyway, this was the first of many trips we have had on the ferry. Typically, the boats have passenger accommodation on the top deck, so you can go up there for wonderful views of the river and the surrounding landscape.

I’m gonna put up a couple of shots from our various crossings here, but as is typical, I’ve created a page which contains all the images taken on the ferry. You can have lookie see here.

There are a number of these pylons on both sides, and they are always full of gulls. People tend to feed them off the back deck, so they are more than happy to participate.

A shot from the upper deck.

This thing was on the ferry on one of our rides. There were a number of motorcycles, and this beast. It’s a T-Rex from Compagna Motors. I had never seen one before. It’s pretty impressive, and pretty exposed. Beautifully built, and looking at their website, a bit on the spendy side. Cool vehicle though.

There are 3 ferries making up this system. Most of the time only two are running, with that dropped to one at night, so nighttime crossings tend to take a bit longer. The third vessel comes into play at peak traffic periods.

Departing the West bank on our last transit.

The sun had gone down, but there was some nice “blue hour” photography to be had.

Well, that’s all for today.

Next week, I’ll wrap up my experiences crafting an image import tool in Python using ChatGPT.

cheers,
